A mistake self-builders make when reviewing an architect’s website
As a self-builder, it can be difficult choosing an architect. After all, making the choice about which architect you hire[...]

A little bit about me:

I'm Mark Siddall and one of the things I love the most about being an architect is helping people create a unique family home they’ll enjoy throughout their life - long into retirement and old age.

The problem is, the quality of spec build houses leaves much to be desired and finding a decent building plot is harder than ever.

That's why, I created my blog Plot Hunter. It's a resource you can use to find plots of land and get to grips with creating your ideal home.

Even though I've been an RIBA chartered architect for more than 13 years, and involved in the construction industry for over 27 years, I still get a kick out of helping to design and supervise construction projects.

There’s nothing at all that we’d change about the house because we got exactly what we wanted. ...Now we’re finally living in a cosy home, we’re not going anywhere!

In our old house, 2011 I think, we measured the temperature of the living room and the fridge. It was warmer in the fridge! More than the savings in the energy bills and the reduced environmental impact, we are enjoying the comfort of our new home.

It was on schedule and budget, plus we didn’t dip into our contingency.

We haven’t had our heating on yet!

These bungalows are beautiful, we haven’t had our heating on yet! My husband was always cold before we came here. It’s amazing we were just saying this morning how fortunate we were to be given the chance to live in one of these properties.

The bungalow has helped enormously health-wise. The clean constant air has helped with my breathing, as I suffer with heart problems and asthma. Also getting about the bungalow is a great help to my mobility, back problems, knee and hip problems.

My new home is cosy and warm

It’s great in the cold weather my new home is cosy and warm and I don’t have to worry about heating costs any more as I rarely use it. I really like living here the bungalows are brilliant!

The construction of our new home has been a real adventure; challenging at times but, all in all, well worth the wait. Both Mark and Joe have met and exceeded our expectations. We had a limited budget and stuck to it. I don't think that we could have been in safer hands.

It’s a very comfortable house, and all the rooms have the same temperature. This is in contrast to previous properties we’ve owned, where we’ve had to squat around the Aga and even sleep with hats and coats on to stay warm.

...Now everything is much easier and more cheery.

“Before it was hard work having family come to stay. In the summer everything was okay but a bit depressing in the winter. [I] had to shut of part of the house because of the cold. ...Now everything is much easier and more cheery. [I] enjoy using the house the whole house.”
